*The ~£15/month figure is an equivalent monthly cost for selected £45, 100 mL topical treatments, including topical finasteride, topical dutasteride and 3%/5% topical minoxidil, when a bottle lasts approximately three months at the prescribed usage. Actual duration varies.
Start lower, where appropriate.
Lower concentration does not mean zero systemic exposure, but some people specifically want to discuss a lower-dose topical DHT pathway. These options feed into the same dedicated product pages rather than a separate customiser.
Finasteride 0.005%
A dedicated low-dose topical finasteride option available through the main topical finasteride product pathway.
Dutasteride 0.02%
A lower-concentration topical dutasteride option that has been directly represented in recent topical dutasteride research.
Growth-focused and custom routes.
Not every topical pathway needs a DHT inhibitor. Minoxidil-based and other supportive combinations can be explored through the Hair Customiser, with the final formulation subject to clinical and technical suitability.
Topical Minoxidil
Explore minoxidil-based scalp formulations, including personalised combination options where appropriate.
Personalised Combination
Build a more complex scalp formulation with compatible actives selected around treatment history, goals and tolerability.
Topical, oral, or personalised?
Different treatment routes target different parts of the hair-loss pathway. The most appropriate choice depends on diagnosis, medical history, previous treatment, preference and clinical suitability.
| Treatment | Route | Main role | Personalisation | Explore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finasteride | Topical or oral | DHT-focused 5-alpha-reductase inhibition | Three direct topical strengths plus oral supply options | Topical finasteride |

| Minoxidil | Topical or oral | Growth-focused treatment pathway | Topical combinations and separate oral routes | Topical minoxidil |
| Custom combination | Topical | Combines multiple treatment mechanisms where appropriate | Highest level of formulation flexibility | Hair Customiser |

Common questions, clearly answered.
What hair loss treatments are available in the UK?
Depending on clinical suitability, hair loss treatment may include topical or oral minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride and personalised compounded topical combinations. Some medicines are licensed for other indications or supplied as unlicensed compounded medicines when prescribed for hair loss.
How much does topical hair loss treatment cost?
Root & Radiance topical finasteride and topical dutasteride are £45 for 100 mL, including the assessment, prescriber review, prescribed medication and UK delivery where treatment is approved. If 100 mL lasts approximately three months at the prescribed usage, that is equivalent to around £15 per month.
What is the difference between topical finasteride and topical dutasteride?
Both medicines inhibit 5-alpha-reductase and reduce DHT activity. Finasteride primarily inhibits type II 5-alpha-reductase, while dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II. Their topical evidence bases also differ, so the choice should not be based only on which medicine appears pharmacologically stronger.
Can I choose my topical finasteride or dutasteride strength?
You can select a preferred strength on the dedicated topical finasteride or topical dutasteride product page. Your choice is then carried into the clinical assessment and is supplied only if the prescriber considers it appropriate.
Can finasteride or dutasteride be combined with minoxidil?
Combination topical formulations can be considered where clinically and technically appropriate. The Hair Customiser is intended for people who want to explore multi-ingredient topical treatment rather than a single-treatment route.
Do I need a prescription for finasteride or dutasteride?
Yes. Finasteride and dutasteride are prescription-only medicines. Prescription treatment is supplied only after clinical assessment and prescriber approval.
Is topical treatment safer than oral treatment?
Topical administration can change systemic exposure, but it does not guarantee zero systemic absorption or zero systemic adverse effects. The specific medicine, concentration, applied dose and formulation all matter.
How long does hair loss treatment take to work?
Hair-loss treatment is generally assessed over months rather than days or weeks. Published studies commonly evaluate outcomes over periods such as 24 weeks, and individual response varies.
Choose the route that fits you.
Start with a dedicated treatment if you know what you want, or use the Hair Customiser to build a more personalised topical formula. Selected topical routes start from approximately £15 per month equivalent.
