Choose a Topical Dutasteride Strength That Fits the Treatment Plan

Root & Radiance offers 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.2% topical dutasteride for prescriber consideration. These are not interchangeable with the concentrations used in every published clinical study, so the evidence needs to be interpreted carefully.

0.02%

Low-dose topical dutasteride

0.02% is directly represented in the 2025 Phase II dose-ranging trial of topical dutasteride and has its own dedicated evidence guide on our site.

Explore 0.02% Dutasteride
0.1%

Intermediate strength

0.1% is available through the personalised pathway where clinically and technically appropriate. It should not be assumed to have the same evidence profile as 0.05% or 0.02% research formulations.

0.2%

Higher concentration option

0.2% is available for prescriber consideration. A higher concentration does not automatically mean a superior clinical result or lower systemic risk.

0.02% Topical Dutasteride Hair Loss Solution

Topical dutasteride 0.02% contains 0.2 mg of dutasteride per mL. This concentration was directly included in a 2025 randomized Phase II study alongside 0.01%, 0.05%, placebo and oral finasteride 1 mg.

In that trial, the 0.02% group improved from its own baseline in target-area hair count at week 24. However, its direct pairwise comparison with placebo did not reach the conventional p<0.05 threshold for that endpoint. The strongest efficacy signal in the study was seen with the 0.05% formulation.

Why we separate product strength from research strength

Your prescribed formulation should not be marketed by borrowing results from a different concentration. Our 0.02% guide explains the data directly relevant to that studied concentration, while 0.1% and 0.2% are described as personalised compounded options rather than pretending the 0.05% trial proves their efficacy.

Clinical assessment + prescription pathway

Complete the online medical assessment. A UK prescriber reviews whether the requested prescription treatment is appropriate before supply.

100 mL prescribed medication + UK delivery

If approved, the £45 price includes the compounded 100 mL topical dutasteride formulation and UK delivery. There is no separate delivery fee.

~£15 equivalent monthly cost*

A larger-format supply

If your prescribed use means 100 mL lasts approximately three months, the £45 all-inclusive price works out at around £15 per month.

This is an equivalent monthly cost rather than a subscription price.

Actual bottle duration depends on prescribed directions and individual use.

Topical Dutasteride vs Topical Finasteride

Dutasteride and finasteride are both 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, but they differ pharmacologically and the topical evidence bases are not equally mature.

Finasteride

Primarily type II inhibition

Topical finasteride has the more mature topical clinical evidence base, including large Phase III studies of specific spray formulations.

VS
Dutasteride

Type I + type II inhibition

Dutasteride inhibits both major 5-alpha-reductase isoforms. Its dedicated topical evidence is newer, including the 2025 Phase II dose-ranging study.

Does Topical Dutasteride Work?

Topical dutasteride is an emerging treatment area. The strongest direct evidence currently comes from a 2025 randomized Phase II study of 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.05% topical dutasteride in 135 men with androgenetic alopecia.

Promising evidence, but still developing

The Phase II study reported dose-dependent improvements in target-area hair count and hair width versus placebo.

The 0.05% topical dutasteride arm significantly improved target-area hair count compared with oral finasteride 1 mg at week 24 in that specific study.

That result does not prove that 0.1% or 0.2% compounded topical dutasteride is superior to finasteride, because those concentrations were not the active topical doses tested in that trial.

How Does Dutasteride Work for Hair Loss?

Dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha-reductase, reducing conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT contributes to progressive follicle miniaturisation in genetically susceptible androgenetic alopecia.

Dutasteride is licensed in the UK for benign prostatic hyperplasia, not for hair loss. A compounded topical dutasteride preparation for hair loss is therefore an unlicensed medicine and is supplied only against an individual prescription where clinically appropriate.

Topical Dutasteride Side Effects and Safety

Topical administration does not guarantee an absence of systemic absorption or systemic adverse effects. Dutasteride belongs to the same 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor class as finasteride, and current UK safety advice should be considered during prescribing.

Current UK safety position

In May 2026, the MHRA updated safety information for finasteride and dutasteride. For dutasteride, precautionary information is being added regarding mood alterations reported with the same drug class, and patients experiencing sexual dysfunction or mood concerns should seek medical advice.

Topical Dutasteride UK FAQs

How much does topical dutasteride cost in the UK?

Root & Radiance charges £45 for a 100 mL prescribed topical dutasteride formulation. The price includes the online assessment, UK prescriber review, prescribed medication and UK delivery where treatment is approved.

How much is topical dutasteride per month?

If a 100 mL bottle lasts approximately three months at the prescribed usage, the equivalent cost is around £15 per month. Actual duration depends on prescribed directions and individual use.

What topical dutasteride strengths are available?

Root & Radiance can provide 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.2% topical dutasteride where clinically and technically appropriate following prescriber assessment.

Has 0.02% topical dutasteride been studied?

Yes. 0.02% topical dutasteride was one of three topical concentrations included in a 2025 randomized Phase II trial in men with androgenetic alopecia.

Is 0.2% topical dutasteride better than 0.02%?

Current evidence does not establish that conclusion. The 2025 Phase II study directly tested 0.01%, 0.02% and 0.05%, not 0.1% or 0.2%. Higher concentration should not automatically be interpreted as greater proven efficacy.

Is topical dutasteride stronger than topical finasteride?

Dutasteride inhibits both type I and type II 5-alpha-reductase, while finasteride primarily inhibits type II. That makes dutasteride pharmacologically broader, but there is not yet strong direct topical-vs-topical evidence proving that every topical dutasteride formulation is clinically superior.

Does topical dutasteride have side effects?

Potential local and systemic adverse effects cannot be excluded. Topical administration does not guarantee zero systemic absorption, and current UK dutasteride safety information remains relevant.

Do I need a prescription for topical dutasteride?

Yes. Dutasteride is a prescription-only medicine. Topical dutasteride for hair loss is a compounded unlicensed medicine and requests require clinical assessment and prescriber approval.

How long does topical dutasteride take to work?

The 2025 Phase II study assessed treatment over 24 weeks. Hair-loss treatment generally requires several months before response can be meaningfully evaluated.

What is the expiry of the Root & Radiance topical dutasteride solution?

The formulation is supplied with an expiry of up to 180 days. Follow the expiry and storage instructions shown on the dispensed product.
